Our indoor wicker sunroom furniture is crafted primarily of rattan, a vine that is the most sought after and widely used material in the furniture industry and intended for indoor use. Rattan pole is a solid vine, extremely strong, partly due to the fibers that grow length wise of the vine. This formation allows for the vine to be cut into any length or to any specified width without compromising the strength or the integrity of the vine. Rattan can be used as poles for the frames of furniture or cut into thin strips and woven over the frames. Rattan has tremendous flexibility when steamed or soaked, won’t splinter due to the formation of the multi strands and will retain any intended shape after drying. A member of the palm family, rattan is a tropical plant that is a very sustainable wood with many benefits to both the furniture industry and the environment. The vine grows hundreds of feet tall with the largest diameter found to be only one and half inches, when cut will grow back on its own and without being replanted. Much of this vine has many uses in making furniture, from the bark which is known as cane, is widely used for weaving both the seats and backs of chairs, which makes for a great material having an appearance much like leather. Reed that is available in various sizes and shapes, from round, flat to half round is cut from the pithy interior of the rattan stalk. This widely used vine can be mistaken for bamboo; however bamboo is hollow and does not have the same great properties like strength and flexibility. If the joints of bamboo are not sealed, bamboo is very susceptible to water and the furniture that has been constructed of this material can be easily damaged. However, bamboo being a member of the grass family and is found to be the fastest growing plant in the world and still is a very strong wood. Wicker refers to furniture that is crafted using a weaving process or bent and formed into a shape and is a general term that is more of a classification coined by the furniture industry, including rattan furniture. The trade of weaving natural materials such as rattan, bamboo, water hyacinth, sea grass, cane, reed, palm leaves and abaca refers to wicker furniture and baskets.
